A 77-year-old man was re- cently treated at Apollo Perungudi Hospital’s branch for a rare cardiac infection. The man had re- cently undergone an emer- gency intracoronary stent insertion in a city hospital after a heart attack. Three days later, he complained of fever. Since his fever did not subside, he was taken to Apollo Hospital in Perungudi.
R. Kannaiyan, general physician and Madhu Prab- hu Doss, consultant car- diologist, suspected that the man could have deve- loped infection in the stent. It could also cause a rupture of the artery, the doctors surmised. diagnosis led M.M. Yusuf, consultant cardiac surge- on, to consider excision of the intracoronary stent. According to him, only 76 cases of such infections have been reported across the world.
The According to the doc- tors, a hospital with infras- tructure and multidisci- plinary team alone would be able to perform such rare surgeries.
